First opened in 2018, New Quarter is a neo-Vietnamese restaurant, set in an elegantly designed space where food is inspired by the fresh and fragrant dishes of South-East Asia. Executive Group Chef, Scott Lord, leads the kitchen, bringing his modern interpretation of some favourite Vietnamese dishes, Banh Mi Fingers are served with whipped chicken liver pate, chicken skin and pickled cucumber. The Beef Tartare features a pho jelly and anchovy tapioca crisps, and a new dish to the menu, Nem Nuong or Vietnamese kebab, is an open beef skewer cooked in pork fat, flatbread and jaew.
The elegant restaurant space, designed by Ewert Leaf, is located on the corner of Swan and Lennox streets, and features wicker lights, cork top tables, and natural muted timber tones.
Commune Creative Director, Simon Blacher, says, “Richmond has always been the home for Vietnamese food in Melbourne. At New Quarter we are embracing the flavours and history of the area and repackaging it into what we believe is a unique expression.”
With four distinct dining areas to choose from, the low seating area accommodates 58 diners, with space for eight in the high-backed wooden booths. For those who would like a seat at the bar, there are ten, along with some prime high seats with windows to the action on Swan Street. The warm interiors reflect the natural light during the day and transform it into a dark and moody dining space at night, catering to locals and destination diners alike.
Blacher shares, “The restaurant allows diners to flow seamlessly between day and night and vibrant Melbourne art and music. It shows off a cleaner and more restrained approach to our renowned style of food, but feel free to get your hands messy.”
